The Steadfast Heart by Arlem Hawks5/28/2023 But when a shadow from Henry's past returns, their newfound hope is tested. Henry is surprised-and intrigued-by Rose's optimistic charm, while Rose slowly uncovers Henry's true self, his compassion concealed behind the pain of loss and betrayal. They both soon learn that first impressions are not to be believed. However, when the beautiful Miss Sinclair appears on his doorstep, begging for a chance to repay her father's debt to him, a moment of weakness finds him offering her a position-as a maid in his own house. Since the deaths of his parents, Henry Covington has isolated himself from society, ensuring the solitude of his estate with his deliberate callousness. But the baron has more than earned his harsh reputation, and Rose must face his wrath in order to save her father-and herself. With her father in prison and their bookshop sold to pay his debts, she has no choice but to turn to Henry Covington, the Baron Norcliffe. A penniless maid determined to save her father, a broken baron bent on isolation, and the undeniable draw between them that could lead to happiness-or disaster.

The alloy of law by brandon sanderson5/28/2023 In that regard, Sam Vimes-from Terry Pratchett’s books-was almost as much of an inspiration as Holmes was.Īnyway, that’s all a side note to what is happening in this chapter. I wanted Waxillium to be a cop, through and through, not an eccentric who solves cases out of curiosity. In my head, however, I decided this book would be more police procedural and less quirky-genius-does-deduction. That’s kind of hard when the story is set up, basically, to be a mystery with an invesigator set in a similar time period to the Holmes stories. It was important to me to acknowledge the obvious influence to myself, but try to keep myself from falling too much into the same mold. There are a lot of paralells, as I mentioned in an earlier annotation. One thing I was aware of when writing this book was that I didn’t want it to feel too much like Sherlock Holmes. But, to be fair, I did put some goggles in the book, so I guess I can’t complain too much. I was very amused to find that the cover of this book had been steampunkified a little bit, with Waxillium having a pair of extraneous goggles on his head. Marasi finds Waxillium experimenting with metals We recommend you read the book before reading the annotations! Also, please note that there are not yet annotations for the prologue or first chapter. Spoilers for chapters after the current one are hidden by spoiler tags. As with all of the other annotations here on the site, each annotation contains spoilers for the current chapter. Here is the first batch of annotations for The Alloy of Law.

Hush by Eishes Chayil5/28/2023 "Family and social life within today's Chassidic community are portrayed with affection for the warmth and the enduring values but with a clear eye for the vulnerability of the young and the hurt. that the genius of its structure becomes fully apparent." - Shelf Awareness Hush by Eishes Chayil A haunting novel set in New York’s contemporary Chassidic Jewish community. "It's not until one finishes this emotionally riveting first novel. "For the reader who is willing to stick with this complex novel, it will strike a deep emotional chord, but some readers may not make it through the first half of the book." - VOYA "Readers may have trouble with the storys frequent Yiddish phrases and be shocked by its casual fear and hatred of goyland. But this is powerful stuff and a glimpse into places not often seen. Eishes Chayil is a pseudonym for Judy Brown, the author of Hush, a book that has been described by some as a sensationalist expos, and commended by others for. No Chillul Hashem here, but gemilut hasadim and tikun olam: serving the dead in loving kindness, repairing the world." - Kirkus This painful, respectful story of redemption is well worth delving into Yiddish-laden prose.

Discworld sourcery5/27/2023 His unique "skill" is implied to be due to being the chosen one of "The Lady", the anthropomorphic personification of luck (both good and bad). Rincewind is also renowned for being able to solve minor problems by turning them into major disasters. The fact that he's still alive and running is explained in that, although he was born with a wizard's spirit, he has the body of a long-distance sprinter. He spends most of his time running away from bands of people who want to kill him for various reasons. He is a failed student at the Unseen University for wizards in Ankh-Morpork, and is often described by scholars as "the magical equivalent to the number zero". Rincewind is a fictional character appearing in several of the Discworld novels by Terry Pratchett. Rincewind as illustrated by Paul Kidby in The Art of Discworld

Jules verne 5 weeks in a balloon5/27/2023 –Excelsior.–Full-length Portrait of the Doctor.–A Fatalist convinced. The End of a much-applauded Speech.–The Presentation of Dr. VERNE as much at home in voyaging through the air as in journeying “Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Seas.” The latter are abundantly amusing, and, in view of the wonderful “travellers’ tales” with which we have been entertained by African explorers, they can scarcely be considered extravagant while the ingenuity and invention of the author will be sure to excite the surprise and the admiration of the reader, who will find M. The mode of locomotion is, of course, purely imaginary, and the incidents and adventures fictitious. It gives, in some particulars, a survey of nearly the whole field of African discovery, and in this way will often serve to refresh the memory of the reader. So far as the geography, the inhabitants, the animals, and the features of the countries the travellers pass over are described, it is entirely accurate. “Five Weeks in a Balloon” is, in a measure, a satire on modern books of African travel. |
